PROBLEM USING MEDIA CENTER TV PROGRAM GUIDE DOWNLOAD
Posted by Mickey on October 31st, 2005

My operating system, purchased pre-installed with my DELL Dimension 8400
computer with dual TV tuners, is Microsoft Windows XP (Professional) Media
Center Edition 2005. I have not been able to access nor download the Media
Center TV Program Guide since 10-16-2005.

When I attempt to access and download the Program Guide, I get a message
which says, “CRITICAL PROCESS FAILURE. A critical Media Center process has
unexpectedly failed. If problem persists, please restart your machine and try
again, or contact technical support. Code: 3”. A green icon appears in the
lower right task bar that indicates “Connecting to the internet to acquire
Program Guide”. However, the Program Guide never downloads and the green icon
can not be closed.

I have tried restarting the machine, etc., but nothing seems to help the
Program Guide download to start. As it is now, I can not record TV programs
with either TV tuner (I have dual TV tuners) because the Program Guide only
says “Data not available”.

Please advise what the problem might be and an appropriate resolution for
that problem that will enable the TV Program Guide to download.

I have basically the same machine and you don't mention if you setup your TV
Signal and if so what too. The guide I think is based on your TV source.
When I first set mine up it was off an antenna for local TV. I later added a
DirecTV box and had to setup the signal again to get the correct guide.

Remove McAfee's Privacy Service.
That should fix your problem. McAfee's Privacy Service is the cause of this
error (if you have it installed).

If that doesn't apply, then let us know and we'll continue troubleshooting
this for you.
