RE: please help me with understanding file fragments

Tom, et al

I found a temporary solution (until MS can allow you to select a line in).
My computer is in a different room than my TV and satellite receiver. I
didn't buy the MCE to control any television. I bought it for its ability to
manage the video and photo files I have. At the time, for the price I paid,
it was the best system.

I was trying to record a program from my satellite receiver, but I wanted
the hi-fi quality. I didn't have 40-foot composite cables, and didn't trust
coax to provide the level of quality that I desired. So, that being said, I
realized that my sat recvr feeds out to the TV with composite, and also feeds
to my VCR via composite. I put a splitter on the coax going out of my VCR
into the TV. The other half of the split coax runs out of that room into my
office where I have another VCR. I connected the coax to the VCR and ran LINE
1 output composites into the LINE 2 inputs on the computer. Unfortunately,
MCE wanted to control the signal via the set top box, and wouldn't save my
settings. MS just needs to give the user an "opt out" feature to the software
which allows the user to still keep their signal settings. I ended up
recording the program using the resident Intervideo software. That's MY
temporary solution to my issue, as for plugging in a Play Station, I agree
with you. This is not a hardware issue. I think that when they wrote the
software, in their arrogance, it never dawned on them that someone would want
to deviate from the program's proprietary setup features. I just downloaded
and installed the MCE "Update Rollup 2" from MS, and it says :

If you own a Media Center Edition 2005-based PC, you’ll want to download
Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 to get the latest
features and functionality. New features include support for Windows Media
Center Extender for Xbox 360; DVD changer support (watch movies and manage
your DVD collection through your external DVD changer); additional HDTV tuner
support; improved DVD burning; and Away Mode, which gives you instant on/off
functionality for your Media Center.

I don't know if the Exteneder for the Xbox can help you with your issue.
Good luck to you all.
