My guess would be the Rollup 2 install failed, and it rolled itself back.
You'd have to redo the install and catch the error. The utility just checks
the Ident value in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Media Center
and allows you to change it if needed. If you have something other than a
number there, then I couldn't tell you why.

I've never needed to do the domain hack, so I can't tell you what the
consequences would be in this case.

It may be related to the hack to enable domain joining. I don't have a machine to test it on, at this time, unfortunately.

As for the version number being shown as "aaaa..ah" on the other machine....... It does look suspiciously like someone is saying, Ah, ahhhhhhh...... you shouldn't be doing that........ But that's just a guess.

Ident isn't a key, but a value. However, something is causing the failure. Look in the Windows folder for MCSetup_UI.log and MedCtrOC.log. Particularly the first one, as it should contain the immediate information about the install. The MedCtrOC.log will have changes, as well, towards the end of the file.

Ident isn't a key, but a value. However, something is causing the failure.
Look in the Windows folder for MCSetup_UI.log and MedCtrOC.log.
Particularly the first one, as it should contain the immediate information
about the install. The MedCtrOC.log will have changes, as well, towards the
end of the file.

I would suspect that you're missing SP1 of the .NET Framework, or a security update for .Net SP1. I had some issues getting the 886903 patch to install on a couple of machines.

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=886903

Best bet is to check Windows Update and see if you're missing any .Net related updates and install from there.

886903 appears to be installed fine, I have no other Windows Updates to
install (custom option).
For this to happen on two completely separate machines suggests something
more fundamental.
Is there any way to do the component parts of the roll up individually?
Once again, thanks for the help.
Roger
