RE: upgrade from 2004 to 2005 media center software

Is upgrading from MCE2004 to MCE2005 worth it?
Especially considering MS doesn't offer support and HP doesn't offer the
upgrade. It seem I'll only be able to get it on ebay or something.

If you want dual tuners and over the air HDTV capability, then yes, its worth it.

HDTV is still a ways off for me. Dual tuners would be nice, but that involves
upgrading hardware, doesn't it?

My interest in WME2005 was the built-in capability to burn DVD's of TV
programs. How is that working out? What format does it record in? Is there
another way to do this? If it is simply a matter of copying the .dvr-ms file,
it doesn't seem worth it since an hour's show is more than 3GB. Thanks for
your insight. John

Yes, you would have to buy another tuner, if you want to use the dual tuner
feature.

Yes, you can get about 1 hour or so on a DVD, that has nothing to do with
MCE, the DVD disc only holds 4.7gig. If you have dual-layer, you can fit
more on (of course the DL discs cost is more than twice a single layer
disc).

How is it that commercial DVDs hold 4-6 hours of video?

If MCE is able to create DVDs that can be played on regular DVD players, then
it must convert the file to a compatible format, which I figured would
compress the data like commercial DVDs do enabling 3-6 hours of video on one
singlesided, single depth disk.

So, can Windows Media Player burn dvds from .dvr-ms files?

The short answer is - they don't.

Commercial DVD's aren't the same animal as the typical one you can purchase
to burn, there are various types of DVD formats that can be used for
commercial DVD's::

a.. DVD-5: single sided, single layer, 4.7GB
a.. DVD-9: single sided, double layer, 8.5GB
a.. DVD-10: double sided, single layer on both sides, 9.4 GB
a.. DVD-14: double sided, double layer on one side, single layer on other,
13.3 GB
a.. DVD-18: double sided, double layer on both sides, 17.1 GB

I don't think I have ever seen 6 hours on a commercial single layer DVD,
generally if the content is much over 3 hours, you have to flip or change
the DVD.

Thanks. I think I'll not bother to update. Sounds like a lot of trouble and
expense for nothing...especially considering the hassles I've read about here
from others who have experienced misery with their upgrades.
You've been a great help.
