- Ripping DVD's to MCE and playback on Xbox and 360 Extenders
- Posted by Scott Micale on January 31st, 2006
Does anyone know of a simple solution for ripping my DVD collection to my
MCE and being able to play them on my Extenders? I don't want to lose much
quility on these. Keeping the files between 1-2GB would be idea and still
have the 5.1 surround sound entact. I know there are limitations with
Extenders.
Thanks all!

DVDShrink is a program that will do this for most DVDs for "problem"
DVDs you would need a combination of DVDDecryter and DVDShrink. This
leaves you with a complete VIDEO_TS folder in your My Videos folder
that you can select just like you would a movie file. The movies will
be 1-2GB with the 5.1 intact AND most DVDs only take a few minutes to
RIP and shrink. Plus, you can elect to burn the DVDs back to a
conventional single layer DVD+/-R(W) if you want. Just Google for the
application names above both are completely free.

Yes I have used this before, but will it play the ripped file on a extender?
I have a feeling it will not.

There are many different answers to this that I have seen but I can tell you
my experiences. The xbox original cannot do ac-3 unless you have a the
special nvidia bronze version of the mpeg playback codec to down convert to
stereo. I have a feeling that even if that worked that many dvds would still
produce choppy video. Untop of that you need to rip to one vob file and then
rename to .mpg. The xbox 360 is a different story. The one vob and rename
method works great. It can do ac-3 and does not have a bitrate limit. One
gotcha I found was make sure you only have .mpg files in the folder. A .ifo
still lingering made the extender not show the video. If anyone else has
comments please fell add them. To do one vob use dvd shrink and uncheck the
split vob to 1GB preference.
