Salvage Data at all cost!
Posted by Wes the Best on January 2nd, 2006

Greetings to all, experienced and/or not so... Help please! I was working on
a very important video project when I forgot to turn on my antivirus software
when I went on the net. In short, I believe my system caught a nasty one! Now
I can't even get to the desktop or access my files through a dos prompt or
start up disk. The blue screen error reads," STOP: c000021a {Fatal System
Error} The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with
a status of 0x0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000). The system has been shut
down, " OS = Preinstalled XP MCE 2005

My Specs - VAIO 920G; 3.6Ghz P4 w/HyTh; Raid 0 250Gb + 250Gb; RAM = 2Gigs

Questions: (1) What does this error mean? (2) What is the best way to save
my data without having to call a $200/hr tech without a gaurantee to save my
work? (3) Can I use a XP Pro boot disk to get to the desktop? (4) HELP?

Any suggestions and responses are greatly appreciated. Thank you

P.S. I tried the Recovery Console from Microsoft Site and had no success.

See:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...d_stp_mtgk.asp

In short:

1) Oh, nasty. Never turn off the antivirus unless it's totally necessary
and you're not connected to anything online. And always backup. But you've
probably realized this by now!!!

2) Perform a temporary parallel install...

3) Yes, sort of.... the parallel installation and the instructions from the
Resource Kit (above) will at least help you get everything back. A Repair
Installation may also fix it, but the RK suggests the Parallel install so
I'd probably go with their advice.

Remove the hard drive from the computer and install it into another
computer as a 2nd (3rd, 4th, whatever) hard drive, then copy your video
files from the hard drive to the other PC's hard drive.

Be careful not to execute any actual programs on the infected hard drive
so that you don't "infect" the host computer. However, your assumption
that the problem has anything at all to do with virus or "malware" is
only just that, an assumption. You could just as well have developed a
memory or some other hardware problem on the Vaio. But, first things
first, and as your subject says, the first thing is: "salvage data at
all cost". You can reinstall or diagnose the Vaio's problem later,
after the data is secure.

Like Barry, I don't think this is a virus. You said you have a Raid 0
machine. Chances are one or both drives might be having problems. Since you
are running Raid 0 and don't have backups, you have a greater chance of
loosing some data.

If you are comfortable and want to spend some time doing it, you could
research and download drive recovery software and install the drives in
another machine and take a look at what's there. Or, hire a local tech and
get there expertise.

A simular thing happened to me with my Raid 1 system. Both drives went out
at the same time. Since I'm mirrored, not stripped, I was able to fully
recover. It cost me about $200 to get all my files back. Well worth the
money. I still had to replace both hard drives myself and reinstall
everything, but I had my data.

Thank you all for your advice. It will be most helpful in my venture to save
and re-establish access to my files. Believe with me that one of these
inexpensive solutions work. Thanks again!
P.S. What about a XP Pro boot disk? Will that work?

Given that you have RAID1, why did you need to pay $200 for anything
when one of the drives failed?

I don't think the OP's problem is related to RAID; if it were a RAID
issue (and a drive in the set failed), his data would be gone, he
wouldn't be able to even get as far as he did; no OS would be
recognized, and nothing would boot at all.
