Sound Card that Works?
Posted by Richard Turnock on May 2nd, 2006

I have read years worth of threads on various boards and I'm still not sure
if it is possible to get an MCE 2005 computer to output unchanged digital
audio (DTS) on SPDIF when it is available and sythesize it or ouput on audio
output when it is not. My best success had the digital work until I selected
a source without it then it stopped. I don't mind buying a new audio card but
I'd like to know it will work.

What do you mean by "output on audio output"?

On my system I get DTS and DD pass-thru as appropriate, and stereo output at
other times. The only audio cable running from my PC is an SPDIF (coax) to
my receiver.

This is with on-board SoundMAX.

Ted - what's the name of your motherboard? I'm using an ASUS P4G8X and I
manage to get AC3 pass-thru on everything except DVD movies in MCE 2005. (I
can even get AC3 pass-thru if I rename a .VOB file to .Mpg). Anyways, I'm
looking for a new motherboard to solve this issue.

Ted,

I meant the analog output when I said "audio output". All the posts I read
say they cannot switch back and forth between DTS and Doolby Pro Logic within
MCE. In my case I can get DTS and play a DVD but if I ever play non-DTS
material I lose the sound until I restart MCE. There are threads running for
over a year on forums on the issue. People generally settle for Pro Logic out
of the SPDIF regardless of the source.

My motherboard is an Asus P4C800-E Deluxe. I have no problem with DTS or DD,
switching between them, etc. It all works as it is supposed to.

Ted,

Thanks. I have the P4P800 and I can't get it to work and have seen many
others report the same issue. Please don't be insulted, but are you sure the
output is DTS when you are playing a DVD and not digital Dolby? Does your amp
provide an indication?

Hi,

I am using the Turtle beach micro with an optical out to my reciever. So far
I have 5.1 in dvd's. So far no issues. Here is a link:

I think that is Dolby Digital, not DTS.

Yes, my receiver provides an indication -- I am 100% positive I am getting
DTS.

Note carefully: my motherboard is a P4C800-E deluxe. When I used a P4C800
Deluxe (note the lack of the '-E') I never could get this to work properly.
I believe that the 2 motherboards have very slightly different soundmax
chips, which could account for the difference. I am also using a newer
driver on my MCE box, which could also account for the difference (version
5.12.1.5240).

Thanks Ted,

That's the difference, I am missing a hyphen and a letter. I have dug up an
Audigy 2 Platinum from the basement, hopefully that will let me do what I
want.
