- Streaming Media freezes on Xbox Media Extender with Vista
- Posted by lanman on December 30th, 2007
I recently replaced my HP Z552 Media Center (piece of junk) that ran Windows
XP with a new HP 9000 series PC running Vista. I have an XBox 360 on my home
network that I use as a Media Extender. When I had Media Center 2005 running
on XP I was able to stream my video and music etc.. to the XBox just fine.
With Vista I was unable to stream my mpeg files to the extender. I found a
hotfix on the MS site that addressed this problem (MS KB article 933049). I
applied it and it fixed the mpeg streaming problem BUT now when I stream
video to the XBox, it sometimes freezes the XBox and I need to restart the
XBox to recover. The same freeze condition occurs when I play music from a
playlist on the XBox. If I stream music by an artist or an album on the XBox
it does not appear to freeze, only when I stream from a playlist. Has anyone
else experienced anything similar to this?
BTW, I created a recovery point in Vista prior to applying the hotfix. I
tried to recover from that point to back out the hotfix but the recover
process failed and I am not able to restore my machine to the previous point.
So much for trying to be cautious :-)

Thanks for your reply in the other post but I would like to keep this thread
going since the other post is really for a different problem that Platinum is
having with the PC freezing. My issue is with the XBox freezing up. I just
tried playing my playlists on the XBox connecting directly to my PC rather
than through the Windows Media Center interface and the problem is gone. When
I play playlists through the Media Center interface on the XBox it freezes
when songs change from one to another. This does not happen all the time but
eventually does occur. I also noticed that when playing a really long
playlist (>2000 songs in it) th eplaylist never even starts playing, it just
freezes the XBox. Thoughts?

Does it always freeze on the same song? Also, when you encounter this
freeze, what do you need to do to recover? (does pressing stop or the green
button have any effect?)

No the XBox freezes when I play a playlist. Large playlists freeze almost
always before the first song starts to play. Otherwise the machine freezes
when one song ends before the next one in the playlist starts (between songs).
To resolve the problem I must power down the XBox and restart it. None of
the controls on the remote work when it is frozen.

Please try the following:
1) Create a new playlist from within Media Center on your Xbox
2) Add two songs from the Windows Vista sample music content to that
playlist (e.g. Beethoven or the like)
3) Start playback of the playlist and then select Repeat to repeat
infinitely
4) Leave the room for an hour
5) Check to see if music is still playing
In short, I'd like to isolate whether this is specific to your music or the
size of the playlist.
