- suddenly getting blue "decoder error" message
- Posted by tyber on October 18th, 2005
When I try to view "live tv" or "recorded tv" system tries for a few
seconds. Then I get dark blue background (in media center window) and
message "Decoder Error: The video decoder has either malfunctioned or is not
installed. Please restart Media Center and/or the computer."
Also, unable to view recorded videos via media player.
System had been working perfectly. Haven't changed anything that I can
identify. I had recently installed DVRMSToolbox and DVR 2 WMV programs, but
I can't see how that would change anything.
Watched TV Friday night just fine, then went out of town. Came home Sunday
and now this. Any ideas?
Notes:
Tried: remove/reinstall nvidia latest decoder
Tried: remove/reinstall ati radeon latest drivers
Tried: windows updates, rollup 2 (was already running oem release)
Tried: system restore, but it can't roll back now that I've done all the
above
My system is: p4 3.0, 1gb, intel 915mobo, ati radeon x700, ati tvwonder
elite, mce 2005
Will try reinstalling/upgrading TVWonder drivers, and removing DVRMSToolbox
stuff.

Did you try reinstalling your DVD decoding software?

Note, if you're using a trial version of the DVD decoder, you may need to change to a different one, or actually buy the one you're using. For example, simply removing/reinstalling the trial version of the NVidia decoder won't work, as it remembers that its already been installed.

Was a licensed version. Worked fine one day, kaput the next.
Switched to CyberLink PowerDVD trial and everything works fine. Guess I'll
have to start collecting decoders.
