TV Tuner
Posted by JP on November 29th, 2005

Hello,
What is one of the best TV tuners I could buy that is supported
under MCE 2005. I am planning to connect my Cable TV's HD Box to my computer
to watch the TV. I read an article on Microsoft Website about the TV tuners
and they reccomend getting a TV tuner with Digital TV Support (ATSC) but I
can' find any tv tuner that has the ATSC support. Please give some inputs.

Thank you!

The best way to connect your HD STB to an MCE Tuner/Video capture card is
using the S-video connection. Since S-Video is SD only all of your HD
programs will be downscaled to SD prior to trannmission.
An ATSC tuner is also known as a HDTV tuner since all HD broadcasts use ATSC
format in the US.
Since you will not be using the video capture part of the tuner card the
quality of tuner itself is not relevent. I suggest a Hauppauge 150 MCE
card.
Microsft has announced that the version of MCE that will come with the Vista
OS in a year or so will support one-way cable cards and at that time you
would want to get a tuner that will support a Cable Card so you can inport
the HD broadcasts directly into your PC by leasing a cable card instead of
an STB from your cable company.

Unfortunately, the only HD tuners supported by MCE 2005 are for Over The Air
HD, not cable or satellite HD. You'll have to wait until Vista, probably.

I would go with ATI's latest tuner. It has the best reviews. Or save a
slot and get a haup 500 dual tuner. It works great.
