- TV Tuner comparison advice
- Posted by Myxx on April 13th, 2008
Hey folks,
I'm looking to upgrade my tuner card, and am having trouble deciding. I
currently use an old Hauppauge WinTV PVR PCI II single-tuner analog card.
It works fine, but I want dual tuner, digital, etc.
Considering I've had great success with Hauppauge, I figured I'd stick with
that. That being said, however, I'm looking hard at the HVR-1800 and the
soon-to-be-released HVR-2250. Problem is, I'm not really sure what the
differences are. Anyone familiar with these enough to be able to enlighten
me a bit, so I can make a smart buy?
Thanks,
Myxx

This is the first I heard about the HVR-2250 so thanks for mentioning it. I
looked around on the internet a bit and from what I have found, this is the
first tuner card that will actually allow you to watch/record two ATSC
programs at once (among other things), which is exactly what I am looking
for. The initial press release said it would be available in Feb 08 but
unfortunately it doesn't seem to be available for sale anywhere yet.

Ahh, right on. Yeah, initial reports showed February 08, then middle of
April, now what's being rumored is 'sometime' in May...
Guess it's worth waiting for though. Dual ATSC is certainly worth another
few weeks.

When I look at the pictures of the HVR-2250 it appears to have an S-video
input. This is good. I assume this will allow me to input a signal from my
Dish Network satellite receiver in addition to ATSC antenna signals at the
RF inputs. Do you know if it has an IR blaster? An IR blaster is also
something that is needed to direct the satellite receiver to start
recording.

See the following:
http://www.hauppauge.com/PDFs/Hauppa...tuner_PCIe.pdf
Note only 2 of the 4 tuners can be used at a time.
If they also sell a model that comes with an MCE Kit then then MCE Kit will
contain IR blasters.

If you want to tune analog from your STB and digital ATSC using one tuner
card you don't have to wait for the HVR-2250 as the HVR-1600 or HVR-1800 are
already capable of doing that. If the HVR-2250 is like the HVR-2200 which is
already being sold in Aus. it will function as a dual analog or digital
tuner, but not as a analog + digital tuner.
The dual digital tuner cards that have come to market so far in the US seem
to have been short lived as they did not function well. Hopefully using the
PCIE buss and a better design that the HVR-2250 will perform better that the
cards that came before it. With dual digital tuners checked past it maybe
best to wait until solid reviews are available for the HVR-2250 as price is
likely going to be 200.00 as opposed to as little as 50.00 for a ATSC tuner.
