- tv tuner decoder problem
- Posted by Diego on May 17th, 2006
I have problems with pinnacle tv tuner card 110i. It seems to be a decoder
problem. I checked on events everytime it collapses and it says "tv tuner
malfunction (0x80040265) Pinnacle PCTV 110i BDA Analog TV tuner".
As i was supposed to, I contacted Pinnacle. After several tryings to avoid
my questions they hanged up on me....rude.... The fact is the decoders that
come with the MCE2005 drivers dont work on MCE at the least in my computer
and the MS decoder checkup utility says theyre not compatible.
The thing is i cant install the driver without those files getting installed
..According to Pinnacle (not good source) theres no warranty the TV tuner can
work with third party decoders yet theirs dont work either. What makes me mad
is that it says on the box the card is designed for MCE2005 as on the
webpage and that was my big and only reason why i got the card (I already had
one not workin on MCE).
Any ideas how can i make my tv tuner card work without my blood presure
going to the clouds?? Id appreciate it tons!!.This has been a bigger deal
than making my sound card work on Linux in 1996 LOL.

While the hardware and driver may be MCE compatible, the DVD Decoder may not be. There are several 3rd party decoders that are MCE certified.

The NVidia decoder is the one I've had the fewest problems with. There is a free trial period, so you can try before you buy.

I posted a while ago on the same issue and they told me about unisntalling
the drivers and all applications. then install the nvidia decoder and the mce
drivers. When i did that i somewhat worked at least it didnt collapsed. Back
then i didnt get any tv signal thou (though it was a PAL issue). Yet when i
restarted my mce collapsed again. i runned the check codec ms application and
it stated that the codec where back in business (the pinnacle ones). After
that i got the same problem yet something improved i got a channel sound
while the comp completely frozen. Should i format and start all over? do you
think this might help?

I have a vague memory about Pinnacle Studio 8 software that you had
to download from them a program that would finish the
uninstallation. You had to do that before installing an upgrade, or
if you wanted to just uninstall Pinnacle.
This makes me wonder if they have a similar package for the drivers
and decoder for your card.
This is a shot in the dark, obviously...
You may have to use all the tools at your disposal - look for stuff
in the registry, use the task manager or equivalent to find out
what's running and where the files are, use third-party start-up
management programs to see what Pinnacle stuff is still hanging
around at startup time, on and on. Scary...
Something I like better than msconfig for startup management is the
free Autoruns program from http://www.sysinternals.com/
They have other free and not free software too.
