Unable to communicate with Extender
Posted by Jason M on July 5th, 2008

Just purchased Linksys DMA2100 Extender and am running Vista Ultimate Media
Center. My VUMC is connected to a home network (w domain) and has ISA Server
2004 installed.

While the Media Center recognizes that an Extender has been added to the
network when it goes through it configuration settings, it gets to
configuring the extender and keeps bringing back the same error that it can't
communicate with the Extender.

I have reviewed all Firewall details and set up a new protocol in ISA Server
to allow the protocol / port traffic but it has not resolved my problem. I
have stopped and restarted the Extender per all instructions to get a new 8
digit key but that hasn't helped either.

Any one with any experience or ideas around this? Thanks in advance.

Remove the Media Center PC from the domain, then try connecting he DMA2100.
If it works, then you can try re-joining the domain. If the Extender still
works, great. If not, then you'll need to review your domain policies,
particularly applying to Network connections and logons.

Make sure that your Windows Media Center computer is not joined to a domain.
Some network domain policies might be set that prevent Xbox 360 from
connecting to a Windows Media Center computer as a Media Center Extender
device. If your computer is connected to a domain, remove the computer from
the domain, and then go through Extender Setup again.

Thank you Doug.
I disconnected the MC PC from the domain and attempted connecting the
DMA2100 but to no avail; same error message. Which to my mind would indicate
an issue with network.

Previously with the MC PC on the domain, when the DMA2100 is set up and
configured, the MC PC does see it and asks about configuring to use it. With
that in mind (and the above), I would assume there is a communication /
traffic flow problem of some kind? But the only hardware between the MCPC
and Extender are 2 switches. I suppose my ISA configuration could be
incorrect though.

The network is being run on Windows Small Business Server 2003. Any thoughts
on a group policy(ies) to check?

Thanks.
