Unable to see new SATA hard drive
Posted by marmitejam on December 11th, 2005

I've just installed an 80gb SATA hard drive. The system sees it (in the
boot-up menu), but the OS (XP Pro) doesn't list it as a drive (i.e. there's
no icon in my computer).
Any ideas?
Cheers

Have you double checked the basics?

If you go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Magement > Disk
Management - is it listed there? If so, try creating and formatting a
partition.

I had to install drivers for the SATA controller on my motherboard before I
could address the hard drive. In my case, I only have SATA drives on my
system so I had to load the driver from a floppy at the time I was installing
windows. I don't know what would happen if I didn't have a floppy drive.

a ha!
Good work fella.
I can see disk0 and disk1.
I take it that any SATA disk space is simply sucked up and labelled as C:
dirive.
Not helpful if you install a second drive to keep things seperate (without
partitioning - not even gana attempt it! a slice of toast will prob pop out
of the cd drive or something silly), and surely information could get split
across the drives once one becomes full?

Anyway, thank you richard for your help.

Thanks also to Mike. Luckily my drivers were ok, as I could see the disk in
device manager (and PC 1yr old), just didn't get why it didnt show as
seperate drive in my pootah (cos I'm old school and prefer win98 style where
simple things are kept simple - like me!)

Thanks again and hope this might help if someone else has the prob and
searches.

No a SATA drive once initialized, partitioned and formatted acts exactly the
same as a PATA drive. Physically seperate from other drives.

In your case drive0 is your current system drive and drive1 is the new
drive. It will not be available for use or show up in Explorer untill it's
partitioned and formatted.

You can see how @
http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/di...disk_mgmt.html
(seagate site but the instructions are generic)

Not at all - Once you have created the partition and formatted it, it will
become a "normal" drive (i.e. drive d).

Top bananas

So you do have to do something (format, etc), but at least it now works
(hopefully. it's formatting now). Would of just sat there unused if you
hadn't replied! Expensive balast.

Cheers geez

Rather ironic that you need one of the oldest storage technologies to
install the drivers for one of the newest, eh.
