- Update for Media Center Edition 2004 to burn DVD to play in home D
- Posted by tonynheidi on February 23rd, 2006
When I purchased my Media Center PC with version 2004, it partially with the
intent of having the capability to record TV on my PC, burn it to DVD and
then allow my 8 year old daughter to watch on TV through my home DVD player
later. My wife and I have actually been watching children's shows with her
and inappropriate material is presented during commercials. Having this
ability to record, we could prescreen such content before her watching.
After receiving my pc, I learned that this was only partially correct and
could watch this recorded TV burned on DVD on my PC only. However, the new
2005 version enables you to burn to DVD and then watch on home DVD player/TV.
Is there or can there be a downloadable update for this feature? I can't
see updating software when all other aspects about this is great.
Thank you for any assistance.

There is no such update. If your OEM provided the MCE 2005 update they may or
may not have provided the DVD burning feature. In any case the built in DVD
burning feature in MCE 2005 does not provide the ability to edit out
commercials.
There are many standalone products that can more or less successfully do what
you want e.g. Sonic MyDVD, Nero Vision Express, Intervideo WinDVD Creator, Roxio
Easy Media Creator 7 etc etc The all have time limited demo versions so try them
all & see what suits you best.

Out of curiosity, could you tell me which channel and children's shows have
commercials innapropriate for children? I'm sure the FCC would like to know
about this...and as a parent of a 9-year old girl, _I'd_ like to know about
this...

To my best recollection, one specific instance was while my wife, daughter
and I were watching an early evening movie on Nickelodeon and an
inappropriate commercial came on. My wife called and reported this
immediately following the commercial. I can recall other episodes of my wife
telling of some other instances. I will check with her for further details.
Thank you

Thank you so much for the information. Do you have a personal preference you
would recommend?

Interesting. I know my daughter does occasionally watch that channel. Could
you tell me what the subject matter of the commercial was, why you thought
it was inappropriate?

I just spoke with my wife and it was Nickelodeon while watching Cosby Show
when a commercial for either Viagra or Cialis came on. There have also been
some instances when a commercial would be advertising some clothing and how
it could make one look sexy. Hope this is helfpul

I use the free DCUT app to cut ads out and you can use Nero VisionExpress
(part of Nero 6 or 7) to burn a video DVD.

I have similar concerns with SPIKE TV. There's not much on there my two sons
can watch but they do like the StarTrek and other SCI-FI series. Invariably,
every other commercial during those shows is for "natural male enhancement"!
