- Upgrading Media Center 2002 to Media Center 2005
- Posted by hivealive on March 7th, 2006
I just purchased a Dell Inspirion 6000 two months ago thinking I would have
the latest Media Center software installed. I checked and I only have the
2002 version. How can I upgrade to 2005 edition? Is there any new features
that would make the new version better?
Thanks!

If you got it with Media Center, then you probably _do_ have 2005. You need
to look in the Media Center menus, rather than the operating system dialogs.
The actual OS is 2002 XP Pro, while the Media Center's About dialog should
say 2005.

You have MCE 2005.
What you're seeing in System Properties is your Windows XP version
information and as such is correct.
To see your Media Center Edition version start Media Center and click
Settings> General> About Media Center> Software Version.

Thanks Dana--I do have the 2005 edition. So does this mean I have all of the
latest upgrades and features for Media Center?

You might not have Rollup 2. Run Windows Update, look in the optional
updates (or non-critical, I forget what they say). There should be updates
there for Rollup 2 and .NET 1.1 Framework if you don't already have them.
Install the .Net framework, then reboot, check again, install the critical
update for .Net 1.1, then reboot, then install the SP1 for .Net 1.1. Then
you should be able to install Rollup 2, and its critical update, with more
reboots along the line...

It says somewhere on the Microsoft Website that this is actually a bug.
I can't remember the link.

It isn't a "bug", did you even read the reply from Dana and

Since MCE 2005 is sold as an "operating system", then it is reasonable
for a user to look for its version in the system properties.
Microsoft created this confusion themselves, by not calling MCE an
application on top of XP Pro (which, strictly, it isn't).
What they should have done is add another line to the Version info
stating the XP Pro version *and* the MCE version--that would save
a lot of customer confusion, as well as acknowledge that the XP Pro
distributed with MCE is really a customized version.

FWIW, the same "Version 2002" is listed in Tablet PC SKUs as well.
