- USB HDTV tuner recommendations
- Posted by PAPutzback on December 6th, 2005
So far I have seen these two:
DVICO Fusion HDTV5 USB Gold - 149 @ PCAlchemy.
VBOX Cat's Eye USB A-3560 - 109 @ PcAlchemy
The only differenct between the two appears to be that the DVICO comes
with an Antenna
But one message for the DVICO says he only receives half the HD
channels that he receives from his Samsung receiver or his ATI HD
tuner.
And one message for the VBOX says he had to run it thru a powered USB
hub because the system didn't provide enough power thru its own USB
port.
What are your thoughts on these two?
Are there any other USB HD tuners I should look into?
Are there any Dual HD tuners USB or on a card?
Are the packaged antennas useful?
Thanks.

As far as I know, there are no USB tuners for HD. In fact, there are only
two supported HD tuners on the official list...one is the ATI HDTV, the
other some brand I've not much heard of that doesn't work in the USA. I hear
the little antennas that come with the ATI may work if you are close to your
station's transmitter, but adding a larger antenna (say, in the attic)
definitely gives a better picture.

FusionHDTV5 USB Gold allows you the options of watching and recording
high definition TV within the MCE environment or using its own
FusionHDTV software.
So is this a false statement "allows you the options of watching and
recording high definition TV within the MCE environment "

And this statement for the VBOX
Compliance with Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005: VBox's USB-A
3560, when operated with Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005, enable
users to watch and record Digital High Definition television using a
PC.

This may be the _other_ USB tuner I was thinking of, but I could have sworn
it was for use outside the US. Well, as it says farther down on the page:
NOTE: Windows® XP Media Center Edition requires a separate analog TV tuner
to be installed in addition to the FusionHDTV5 USB Gold. Only Over the Air
(OTA) HDTV is supported by Windows XP Media Center Edition.
So, yes, you won't be able to do cable HD with this one. But at least it's
USB...
