- various DVD burning issues
- Posted by Dave Rudert on December 13th, 2005
I'm trying to burn edited home movies onto a DVD using MCE 2005. At first I
experienced the hanging at 4%/unable to create DVD error issue. I installed
the rollup 2 and the various .NET patches. Now when I try to create the DVDs,
the I get the unsupported file type message. These are movie clips that play
on MCE and media player just fine. I'm not sure where to go next. Thanks in
advance for any help.

What did you edit these movies with & how did you get them into MCE?

Thanks for the response.
I edited them with the software that came with my Sony camcorder. Picture
Package, or something like that. I saved the edited clips/chapters into a
folder in my videos, and when I opened MCE to burn the DVD, the folder was in
the my videos section of MCE. When I tried to select them to add to the DVD I
was burning, the message was unsupported file type.
Any help would be much apreciated.

Sounds like you may not have the appropriate codecs installed, but you
should if you can play them in Media Center. Do you know what the file
extension is? I was able to burn a DivX AVI file to a DVD with Media Center
and it plays fine on my standalone DVD player.

I didn't know that you can do that. Do you mean that it actually converts DivX
files into DVD compliant MPEG2? or does your DVD player handle DivX?

Well, now, that's a darn good question. The DVD player I tested it in is a
new small portable with built-in 7-inch LCD screen - I didn't bother testing
it in the others but I'll try tonight. It was a 2-hour show, Fawlty Towers
Revisited, and after chopping out the commercials with Video ReDo Plus, it
was about 3.7Gb MPEG. Just for grins I ran it thru Crunchie and ended up
with a 1.5Gb DivX AVI. I originally tried burning the 3.7Gb one but Media
Center never would recognize the file (adding the check to the box on its
icon). So I pointed it at the AVI version and it liked that one. It must
have done some transcoding as it took about 2 hours to burn.

When I see the file in explorer or pull up the properties, it only says movie
clip. I'm not sure other than those sources where to get at the file
extention. The odd part of this was that MCE seemed to recognize/support the
file type until I installed the rollup 2 patch. (although it still wouldn't
burn anything.) Thanks for the help.

Just for grins, google for "ffdshow" and go install it...it's got the DivX
AVI codecs and may be what you need.
