Virtual memory

I want to increase virtual memory on my laptop as much as is humanly
possible. If I leave it up and running for any appreciable time – and have
multiple programs open – it slows down to a crawl. What – if anything – is
the outside limit? System information reports:

Total Physical Memory 512.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 220.85 MB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB
Page File Space 1.45 GB
Page File C:\pagefile.sys

Looks like it's not using much of your virtual memory, so chances are there
may be something else slowing your PC down. You might bring up Task Manager
and seeing what is taking all your CPU cycles.

Remember, too, that typical laptop hard drives are only 5,400rpm, slower
than most desktop hard drives. It might also be useful to know exactly
_which_ apps you have open...

Since this newsgroup supports Media Center PCs, you might want to post in
another newsgroup if your laptop isn't running Media Center Edition.

You're probably right that it's not VM. I've noticed that it SEEMS to happen
whenever I've had an Acrobat file open for a while. Anybody know if this is
some sort of memory or process hog?

Which version of Acrobat are you running? I had so many issues with 6 that I
went back to 5 on most machines. I think some of mine are now 7, which seems
much faster than 6.
