- Vista Tuners
- Posted by Eagle117 on October 4th, 2005
Can it be assumed that all major tuners supported by XP MCE will be supported
by Vista? I'm going to load up my Vista Beta soon and would like to have a
tuner for it. I already have a Hauppauge MCE-150 that I love and if it is
supported, I'll use it in this machine. Is there a starter list of tuners
that are/will be supported by Vista?
Side question: Is there a Vista community that I could ask this question in
if it isn't appropriate for this one?

This will be up to the manufacturer to provide Vista compatible drivers.

To my knowledge no manufacturer has released any form of drivers for Vista
tuners. Are any included with the beta of Vista or how are people testing
out this functionality?

At this point, there are no tuner drivers distributed with the current build of Vista, that I'm aware of. You might be able to run some of the current 32 bit drivers, but then again, you may not.

Has MS actually announced that the current tuner drivers for MCE 2005 will
not work with Vista and that the vendors must supply new ones?

The driver model is changing for Vista. I don't have all the details, I'm not that much of a programmer, but I'm sure that the majority of drivers will need to be overhauled for Vista.

Good Thread...
Can anyone provide experience of the Black Gold DVB-t tuner card.
Does anyone have this working with Vista?
Thanks

A bug in Vista Beta 1 prevents _any_ BDA minidriver from successfully
loading. Thus, the only way for a DVB-T card to work is if it uses a
proprietary non-BDA driver. Some manufacturers offer both proprietary as
well as BDA drivers. In such cases the former _might_ work, whereas the
latter definitely will not.

Thanks Robert,
Do you know if a hot fix is likely to be made available or will we
have to wait till next beta? Are there any work arounds (reg hacks)
that will get the BDA driver loaded?
This was quite an over sight :-(

I don't think so.
> or will we have to wait till next beta?
Microsoft has announced there'll be monthly CTPs of Windows Vista, so
there'll be releases before the next beta.
> Are there any work arounds (reg hacks)
> that will get the BDA driver loaded?
Well, you can patch the offending binary (BdaSup.sys), but putting the
patched binary is quite a challenge now that Microsoft is employing NTFS
security to protect Windows systems binaries. It's probably easier just to
wait for a future CTP which hopefully fixes this issue.
> This was quite an over sight :-(
Well, considering the general broken-ness of the current Vista beta's
multimedia features, this just fits in the picture, unfortunately. Don't
think that managing to make a BDA driver load is sufficient for a
satisfactory digital TV experience in Vista Beta 1...
