Spent the last several hours searching support options for a problem w/ MCE
2005 which was introduced by loading MCX for Xbox. MCE 2005 support is
supposed to be handled by my hardware vendor (H-P) but the software I have
problems with came from MS, not H-P. Do I try to get XBox support tp help?
My problem is w/ MCE, not MCX per se. Although loading MCX was the
precipitating factor. I just don't know, so posting here is my last-ditch
attempt at getting help. Even if that helps takes the form of directing me
to the proper contact.
Quick synopsis of my problem:
- I have an H-P MC system that I upgraded from MCE 2004 to MCE 2005. It was
working great up until yesterday.
- I have an Xbox. I went to the company store and bought MCX for it.
Loaded MCX on both the XBox and the PC - no errors reported.
- After installing MCX, I can view TV and pictures from the PC on the XBox -
hurrah! Basic MCX functionality seems to be there.
- However, I cannot play music. Selecting My Music on the XBox brings up an
error "Audio Error 80040155 Interface not Registered". None of the music
from the PC is visible at the Xbox.
- What's worse - the exact same error now occurs on the PC - my music has
disappeared in MC, and the same audio error occurs when I go to My Music.
(Music files are still there, and media player has no trouble finding and
playing them.)
- So I uninstalled MCX from the PC just to get my previous functionality
back, and it didn't fix the problem! I have now broken my MCE installation,
can't use MCX, and have no idea where to turn for support.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

HP should provide support for any OEM versions of MS programs that came
with your machine.
MS should provide support for any RETAIL versions of MS programs that came
with your machine (or which you added afterwards).
I can't comment on the quality of the support you will get from HP.

I would suggest downloading and installing Media Player 10 on the MCE PC...

Thx for the responses CWatters and Dana Cline.
I do have Media Player 10 with all updates installed on the MCE PC and it
works fine, before and after the install of MCX. Still has all my music in
the "library".
I agree that MS should support software bought from them, but am still
looking for a contact point for MCX - Xbox hardware support? Xbox games
support? XBox live support? These are the only choices I can see from
searching thru all the different MS support sites. I wish there was one for
MCX.
On a positive note, I read in the Seattle Times this morning that an update
for MCE was just posted on windowsupdate.com. Perhaps I should install that
and hope

Guide To Error 80040155 In Windows Media Player
The error "Interface not Registered" while burning a CD should be fixable by simply reinstalling WMP over itself. (If you get this while trying to move content to another portable device reinstall the drivers for it, and then follow the rest of this post.)
Depending on how WMP was installed on your machine you may already have the installer. If you do it is located in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\Installer. The file name of the installer is "mpsetupxp.exe"
If you don't see the folder then run C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\setup_wm.exe and that will re-download the installer and install it.
While this applies to a different problem, the error is the same, and this may resolve your issue.

As unlikely as it sounds, you may be onto something here Doug. Even though
WMP appears fine, knows about all my music, and plays tracks without error,
indeed it returns Interface not Registered when I try to burn a CD. So,
maybe WMP does need to be reinstalled. Unfortunately, when I run C:\Program
Files\Windows Media Player\setup_wm.exe, I am informed that Media PLayer is
up to date on my machine and given no option to reload it. ("Your computer in
running the most recent version of Windows Media Player 10 and all its
components. No update is available at this time.")
So now I have three options:
load the new update rollup 2 for MCE and hope that fixes things
uninstall and reinstall WMP 10 and hope nothing in MCE or MCX breaks as a
result
call xbox support and see if they are willing to help me with what seems to
be a WMP 10 problem caused by MCX
None of these seems to be a clear favorite, but they all beat reloading the
entire machine from scratch while preserving the 10 Gbs of TV and music I
have. Sigh...

Strange, when I run it, I get a download dialog and it proceeds to do its installation routine.
You can try removing WMP10, from Add/Remove Programs (make sure Show Updates is checked) and then reinstall it.

followup to my last post:
I opted for uninstalling and reinstalling WMP 10 and it worked. I can burn
CDs in WMP 10, and MCE My Music works as it should. Of course I'm just back
to square 1 now, since I removed MCX in the debugging process. But I just
received MCX 1.01 in the mail today, so I am hoping this version goes in with
less pain than 1.00 did.
Thanks for the pointer Doug

You're welcome :-) Just as an FYI, I've installed and reinstalled the MCX software on various different machines, and have not encountered the problem you did. I suspect some other software broke Media Player, and its core components.

You could be right. Before I realized I had a problem w/ MCX, I also
installed TweakMCE, Playlist Editor, and Solitaire, all MCE powertoys. I
used Tweak once and the others not at all. Tweak and Solitaire then
disappeared from the Other Programs list never to be seen again. Playlist Ed
remains and works.
I'd like to say all is well now, but I'm stuck on trying to get MCX 1.01
installed. I can't seem to get the two machines (PC, XBox) to recognize each
other. Network connections have not changed since this worked yesterday w/
MCX 1.00, so I'm mystified. The MCX 1.01 release notes said to remove the
previous extender version using MCX Manager, but I had already removed all of
MCX from the PC. So I'm starting from scratch on both machines, and
something is not right. Still working on it though...

Well I can say all is well now. Finally got success in loading MCX 1.01. As
far as I can tell, everything works as advertised - including My Music on the
XBox and the PC. I am willing to believe that WMP 10 was broken all along,
and I didn't know it. The first thing MCX tries to do in My Music is add
files to the library and this is where the failure was.
