- will a Wired XBox 360 controller connected to an MCE PC work?
- Posted by casey chesnut on November 28th, 2005
i know that you can use the XBox Controller (connected to an XBox) to
control MCE using the XBox as an Extender.
but what i want to know is if you have a Wired XBox Controller connected
directly to a MCE PC (paired to an XBox) ... will it control MCE?
i know that it definitely will not (without being paired to an XBox) ... but
i want to know if the extra XboxMCELite-ENU.exe install for pairing with an
XBox enables this functionality?
er, um ... if not ... i wrote this MCE AddIn that does enable that scenario.
http://www.brains-N-brawn.com/mceXInput/
just trying to find out if it was a worthwhile exercise ... or a waste of
time
Thanks,
casey

Technicaly you are way off.
First of all, the only interaction between the 360 and MCE is
that the optional dvd romote can be your media center remote.
But you will be able to use the controller with Vista. They have
not specified how, or if you will need the wired or wireless or if both
will work.

i am not way off.
currently, you can use the Wired XBox 360 Controller with a PC (regardless
if it is MCE or not).
if the controller is connected to an XBox 360 (being used as an Extender)
then it can control the MCE shell.

dont you want to be able to control the MCE shell the same regardless if the
controller is connected to an XBox or directly to an MCE PC?
so would somebody else answer my question?
Thanks,
casey

I believe that as long as you have the MCE system NIC card connected with
the XBOX extender network connection with a cross-over cable that it should
work. In fact with some newer NIC cards they sense when they should swap the
send and recieve lines and a cross-over cable is not required.

sorry, thats not the question i'm asking either.
the wired controller is physically connected to the MCE PC,
so the XBox is basically out of the equation at this point.
the only reason i care about an XBox being paired is because you have to
install an extra piece of software on the MCE PC.
and i don't know if that extra piece of softare happens to do the same thing
as the code i just wrote?
Thanks,
casey

The Xbox 360 controller will NOT control Media Center in the same way when
connected to the PC as it does when the controller is connected to the Xbox
360. The code that remotes the Media Center experience on the Xbox 360
translates the controller commands and there's no code on the PC that would
do this. Navigation commands will probably still work the same but that's
about it.
FYI - here are keyboard commands you can use for Media Center on the PC:
