- Windows taking a long time to load- windows media center
- Posted by John Anderson on November 29th, 2005
Hello,
I am currently using a laptop with Windows Media Center installed on it. It
is being used in a domain environment and for personal use. It is taking
about 3 minutes to boot up to the "Login" screen, which is a lot longer than
it used to take.
Steps that have been taken to verify proper boot:
Verified that the DNS was set properly
Made sure that the LAN connection was the first in the boot priority
Verified Domain settings
Checked Harddrive capacity
Verified RAM was working properly, tested successfully
Everything appears to be correct, and it has sped up a little bit since I
checked the boot order for the LAN connection, originally was set to
wireless. Previously, this laptop only took about a minute to boot to the
login screen, but for some reason it has slowed down. Once the login screen
pops up, the computer operates fine with no problems/errors.
Please advise of stepes that can be taken to resolve this issue. I
appreciate it. Please copy your response to janderson@mbconsultinggroup.com.
Thanks,
John

Try runing msconfig in msconfig press the start tab, and see what apps are
loading at startup, remove the any apps you do not need at start up.

MCE doesn't officially support connecting in a domain environment.
Regardless, it sounds like Windows ROT.
Reformat and reinstall fixes it every time. It also takes less time then
troubleshooting windows problems, typically.
You can try to right click on my computer and select manage. Then go to the
event viewer and check system logs. Sometimes startup services time out and
that is what typically delays the logon screen. If you see timeouts or other
errors you can try to troubleshoot them. When I experience these types of
problems I try to troubleshoot them give up and in time the just go away,
guess it's just part of the XPerience. It would be nice if you could somehow
'see' what windows is hung on. If anyone knows of a utility like that Please
let me know. I did change some registry entry that was supposed to give me
verbose startup inf ormation. However it doesn't display anything until
after log on, so that's no help.
Unfortuantaly if you are pressed for time, reformat and reinstall.
I keep a ghost image of my computer after a fresh install with core
applications and just reimage my computer from time to time.
FAQ for MCE
Can I connect a new PC running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 to a
work network or domain?
While you can access network resources on a work network or a domain, you
cannot join a Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 PC to the domain. PCs
running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 are designed specifically for
home use. .....
