Windows Vista Media Center and XBox 360 Connections
Posted by shaun on April 17th, 2006

Hi,
I just installed Vista (5342). I am trying to connect my xbox 360s to
it as extenders. The 360s show up in the Network area. I uninstalled
my free AVG antivirus, disabled windows firewall and the realtime stuff
for windows defender. The alert will pop up in Media Center saying a
new extender is detected, so I go through the wizard. When it gets to
the part of connecting to the extender, it attempts it, the 360 shows
it is doing network access, and then the 360 will come back and say
"connection error". The Media center, meanwhile, still shows the same
thing. It just sits there attempting to connect indefinatley. If I
cancel out of that and go to the extenders option in the settings, the
xbox shows up but as unconfigured. This happens with both Xboxes.
Also, every once in a while through all my attempts, the xbox will get
into this state where it will show the 8 digit key for a second and
then immediately attempt a network access. Then it comes back with the
same message that it can't connect. I finally just have to disconnect
my computer from the network and attempt the same thing again to avoid
going straight to the network access attempt. This actually happened to
me with Media Center 2005 once, and somehow I finnaly managed to get
around it. I just can't remember how. I'd be grateful for any insight
anyone has. Thanks.

PS Should I be able to ping the XBoxes? I have tried pinging their ip
address but it doesn't respond.

Media Center Extender functionality is not enabled in that build. Additionally, questions related to beta operating systems should be addressed to the appropriate newsgroup. These all begin with microsoft.public.windows.vista..............
