I have MSMCE 2005; everything appears to be working with the exception of my
only receiving 96 channels (basic cable) although I am a digital subscriber
with 700+ channels in my line-up. I have digital cable (Scientific Atlanta
box) and correctly followed directions to set up my computer for the TV
signal source (digital cable) and correctly run the software wizard... yet
the signal being sent to my pc is in analog................??? Please help.
Thank You.

Just to be certain, you're running the incoming feed into the set top box, then the output of the set top box into your tuner card?

What tuner card is in your system and how is the Set Top Box connect to the
tuner card? If you have an analog tuner card, you can only get analog cable
when the coax is directly connected to the tuner card. With digital cable,
typically the STB would be connected to the card with S-Video and the STB is
what actually changes channel.

Bingo!!

I did the same thing until I took a step back and thought about it. The STB
has to be the signal source (and be able to change the channels) for digital
cable. The solution is to run the S video O/P of the STB into your tuner
card. Then Media Center will set it up properly. When I did this, and
re-ran the Media Center STB setup, my cable service provider's digital option
came up. Now I have all the channels I am supposed to have.

S-Video is an analog signal interface. So while you may be using a
digitial STB, you are not getting a digital signal (and if you are
talking about HDTV, you are "down converting" it from HDTV to standard
NTSC TV).

How do you (or do you at all) interface an HDTV STB to an MCE system in
such a way that you are viewing/recording HDTV (as HDTV)?

Ahem....Digital in this case refers to how the cable provider sends the
signal to the STB. For example. from channel "ZZ" onwards is a digital
signal (on the cable, upstream from the STB). The STB does the decoding of
the digital signal and sends it (via S-Video cable) to the PC tuner card
where MCE picks it up.

Now, an entirely digital capture, storage, and playback of, say cable HDTV,
at 25Mbs is certainly possible. There are numerous guides and message
threads on various fora about how to do this. They all involve capturing the
digital stream via the firewire connector on the STB. This method works very
well, but it is not part of the typical MCE setup and not supported by the
current version of MCE.

The other method is to simply purchase the latest HD-PVR from your service
provider, but that is no fun, and the storage space is limited.

If it's being sent via S-video, then it's an analog signal. It may have
been digital at some point, but it got converted to analog (and,
specifically, NTSC analog, e.g. it's not an HDTV signal any more). To
be a digital signal, it would have to be sent over a digital interface,
e.g. DVI or HDMI (or some others, Firewire, for example).

The really relevant point is that any S-Video signal, no matter where it
came from or how it was transmitted, is an NTSC video signal: 525 lines
per frame, 30 frames per second, interlaced into an even and odd field
of 262.5 lines each, and limited to a total bandwidth of about 4 MHz (a
horizontal resolution of less than about 400 lines, and most commonly
240 to 320 lines [pixels]).

The STB is connected to my PC by coaxial cable. How can I determine what

Dear Racal,

I followed your instructions to use an S-Video cable instead of an coaxial
cable to connect STB to PC, and as a result I now have all the channels I'm
supposed to have (thank you) but now I lost the audio feed so please tell me
what needs to come next...?

Thanks again!

You need to connect the audio out from your STB into your Tv Tuner's Audio
inputs (NOT your sound card's audio input).

the T.V. is an older model that does not have RCA ports... why can't I

MCE expects all recorded tv audio to come from the tv tuner tuner, not your
audio card.
Your tv tuner card doesn't have RCA audio inputs?
What card is it?

In MCE, the tuner has a hardware encoder that combines the video and the
audio into a single MPEG2 data stream. Thus the audio has to be on the
tuner card, feeding it into the sound card won't work. Most tuner cards
have audio (and video) inputs on them.

Will it work the same if I connect from STB into my DVD player inputs instead
of TV?

The s-video is only sending a video signal from your STB to your computer.
You need to connect the Audio Out (from the STB) to the Audio In of the
tuner card in your MCE computer, the DVD player (or the TV) has nothing to
do the process.

Probably doesn't matter much, any decent cables should work, shielded cables
might have some effect, depending on what else is around. I've never thought
the really expensive audiophile stuff (like Monster cables) were anything
more than a scam, but that's just my opinion.
