- Xbox 360 mce - mpeg audio sync problems
- Posted by mikemagst on December 11th, 2005
I have setup the 360 without problems in my wired home network.
The 360 mce however has problems with some (not all) mpeg files. The audio
sync is of by about 0,25 seconds or more.
This happens with some mpg files, and with some files that i converted with
numerous programs (videora, tmpgenc and so on).
As an example a small mpg video works fine on my pc (audio in sync), but
when i use the 360 the audio is out of sync in a bad way. Here are the files
specification :
Size 39mb
TVstandard NTSC
video type mpeg1video
resolution 352x240
Bitrate 1403kbps
navpack NO
Audiotype MP2
Sample Rate 44100
Audio bitrate 224kbps
I am in the EU so i have an European xbox 360 attached to a Plasma screen
with the component HD cable, running at 720p.
I have tried for days now to find a common dominator for this problem, but
cannot find it. The only thing that seem to help is to change the audio
offset by hand for each file. This is too much work.
Anyone else with the same problem, or better solution for this ?

Nothing is out of the ordinary with the video specs below; are you saying
that two files encoded by the same version of the same encoder application
exhibit different behavior when played back?

Yes it does, the video plays back fine on the pc without any audio sync
problems. However when i have the 360 play it via the MCE it has big audio
sync problems.
So it is the same file, played on the wmce pc and on the 360..

Which encoder program did you use to create this file? Also, do all files
encoded with this program exhibit this issue?

All encoder programs give the same result, i have tried : videora 360
converter, winavi, ffmpeg, tmpgenc xpress and manual with vdubmod avi->wav
extraction. All have the same result.
The only way to get these files in sync is with tmpgenc xpress and using the
"cut edit" function to offset the audio with -250ms.
Again not all xvid/divx files have this problem, and not all need the same
offset althoug its close always around 150-400ms and always minus. The funny
bit is that the convertet files with an offset run fine on the 360 and not so
fine on the pc...
I guesstimate that the mpeg2 codec in the 360 is slightly different from the
mpeg codec's that the pc have.

I too have this problem. Kind of releived that I'm not the only one.
I have several files that I have encoded (using Media Encoder and Videora)
which play perfectly on the PC but lag on the 360. Some start off ok, and get
progressively worse.
I have discovered that the quality of the encoding seems to have some
relation to the problem, with higher quality video seeming more likely to lag
the audio.
I'd love to get to the bottom of this as other than this slight glitch I'm
loving the whole 360 experience!

Ah glad to hear i am not the only one, i was slowly starting to question my
ability to mess with pc-console soft and hardware ;-)
The 360 is great, however i bought it mainly for the mce functionality and
saw the game part as a bonus. As it is now i am strongly thinking of putting
the 360 on ebay and going back to a xbox1 with xbmc. That plays 99% of all
video files without problem.
Now how do i get the ugly black xbox1 into the nice and friendly looking 360
case
Without joking now : this audio problem seriously hurts the 360 as a mce
device. Hope MS or the community solves this soon, otherwise its really
forward to the past and back to Xmbc.

Do all files encoded with these apps exhibit this behavior?

No not all files.
Like i wrote before, i cannot seem to find a common cause for the delay.
Some files convert perfectly without any troubles while other have the audio
sync problem.
- Posted by Kaedo on December 15th, 2005
Same here, I have encoded some files which are fine and others which are not.
I have noticed that some seem to progressively get worse during playback and
after about 45minutes the delay in the audio is laughable.
Again the files play fine on the PC, just an issue when played via the 360.
I wondered if it was a codec issue, but I have uninstalled, reinstalled all
the codecs I can find and still no joy. Like I said before, I have tried
Encoder and Videora, I am now trying Winavi and will look tonight to see if
this has solved my issue. If this doesn't work I will try to encode a file on
a different PC and then transfer it to my Media Center.
What would be really useful if we could download a wmv file and try that to
see if we can replicate the results. If we both get the same issue, or not,
at least we would be someway toward finding the possible cause of the
problem.
The only other thing I can think may be causing it is the router. I use a
Netgear WGR614 v.1. but have wired connections between the MCE and 360. I
only use the wireless for my laptop/pda. Is it possible that this is causing
the problem? (I am close to being completely out of my depth now I'm afraid).
A big thank you for helping us by the way and if I will report my findings
later on with the files I encoded with winavi.

Hi Kaedo,
I also have a netgear router (wgt624) however when i stream to another pc
there is no audio sync problem. So i dont think its the router.
Another thought : Could it be that a lot of the problematic files are from
"taped" tv broadcasts ? It seem that there a lot of different tv-cards that
all introduce different errors in the audio / video stream.
I also replaced all codecs but no go.
Ebay however has solved the problem for me, the 360 will be gone in a few
days. I am going back to the previous xbox with xmbc. This until MS is ready
and releases the 360 version 1.1..
I wish i could find the problem also, but i have too little time to be a
slave of the electronics instead of the other way round.
I'll keep following the discussion though, as the 360 will be back as soon
as everything is o.k.
Regarding the 360, it will probably be less buggy, more silent and cheaper
within a few months anyway. The xbox1 will keep me busy until then.

Have you tried TMPGEnc? It's likely that the encoder is doing something
with the files that the decoder doesn't quite like, though without seeing
the files, it's hard to say exactly what.
Also, do you have a sample file that has sync problems that is relatively
small (<10 MB) and okay to share? If you do and you e-mail it to msft_mcx
at hotmail, I can take a look to verify whether I see the same behavior.

Hello Todd :
Quote : "All encoder programs give the same result, i have tried : videora

Ill try if i can cut the avi file to a small length, otherwise ill send you
and mpeg with the some problems.

Sorry it's taking way to long with my internet speed to send you any file
that would be long enough to make a good judgement.
I could point you to a torrent site but that would be illegal.
Maybe someone with a t3 line could help us out and send Todd something that
has the same problems.

A (re-)encoded MPEG file is more interesting than the raw AVI file; you
should be able to create a small file with decent time length if you reduce
the resolution to QVGA and bit-rate to <1.5 Mbps...

Hello Todd,
A test video file has been send to your hotmail address.
It runs fine on my pc, but not on the 360. The audio is off by about 250ms.
Watch how the mouths open before sound comes.
Thx, Mike

The size was about 11,5mb. I have split the file in two now and send it
again. (2 mails with 2 rar files).

have we got any further with this? I've been out the loop for a few days. I
have had some problems with file I have encoded on my PC being out of sync
even on the PC too now. I suspect a defective codec. I have unistalled all of
the codecs I could find and only installed the ones called Codec's for IT
professionals 8.0 (or something similar) and will try to encode the file
again. It may be nothing, but I'll try it. I think it must be software
related otherwise wouldn't there be a lot of people asking about this?
If only we could just run the originals!
