- XBOX Media Center Extender wont connect
- Posted by Archgrad on October 3rd, 2005
I have MCE 2005 and the XBOX Media Center Extender on a home network. I
installed the component for the Media Center PC and inserted the XBOX disk
per the instructions. The XBOX generates the code to input into the PC for
the connection and the XBOX screen shows the Contacting...and Connecting...
screens but goes all black instead of showing the MCE menus. The PC Media
Center Extender Manager shows the XBOX as "Not Connected" always. I can see
the XBOX in my router under attached devices so it is given a valid IP
address from the DHCP.
I am confused since the netowrk can see the XBOX and the PC, the XBOX
seemingly can see the PC and vice versa since I can input the code and get
the "contacting" and "connecting" screen. I made sure that the XBOX is set
to standard (4:3) screen mode thinking that the original setting for
Widescreen would be a problem since the XBOX Media Center Extender shows to
be only capable of 4:3.
I do have an older XBOX (Manufacture Date November 17, 2001) that has never
been modded so I am curious if the older machines are not compatible with the
extender. I have never read anything about this being a possibility.
I have requested the MCX update disk and am hoping that will help.

Couple questions:
1) Are you running third-party firewall, privacy, or virus software on your
PC? If so, what software package(s) do you have?
2) Have you replaced or otherwise modified any Windows system components?
(e.g. pre-release DLLs from the Internet)

1) I am only running the default MS Firewall and disable it when trying to
connect. I also have Norton AntiVirus 2005 that I temporarilly disable
thinking it might be refusing the connection.
2) Not that I know of. To the best of my knowledge, the MCE pc is pretty
straight-forward. I do have another old computer I can install MCE on to try.
It is my understanding that I will not see the XBOX in My Network Places
attached Workgroup Computers (even if it is working). I cannot see anything
that tells me that hte XBOX is connected to the pc, but I can see it as being
attached in the Netgear MV814v2 Router (I think this is the model). There
are no firewall settings in the router enabled. I even tried going through
my gigabit switch only with the same result.
Thanks for the response and suggestions...

Just to confirm,
You DO NOT have the Microsoft AntiSpyware installed do you? If so, remove
it. The AntiSpyware software will not support Media Center Extenders.
You have the latest XBOX CDROM (the original disks have since been updated)
and the current Media Center Extender update software installed of the
MCE2005 machine correct??
How is the XBOX attached to your network: Wired or Wifi?
Do you have a hub or switch in the configuration between the PC and the
XBOX? 100 mps switch is the minimum supported network. 10mps HUBS will not
work?
If you want to remove all networking, go with a cross over cable and give
the XBOX a static IP. Does it work then?

Oh,
Now that you mention it, I might have the MS AntiSpyware program. I am
pretty sure that I do not, but I will need to double-check. Unfortunately, I
am not at home so I can't try immediately. I do have AdAware installed, but
not running in the backgound (only runs when I launch it).
I have the install disks that came with the original package and have since
requested the update. I have not received it yet.
My network is wired with cat6 cable and keystones and a 10/100 router/4 port
switch that I only use the router function and one port tied into a
10/100/1000 switch. All patch cables are cat6 and the switch auto-senses the
uplink so no need for a crossover cable. Again, the router sees the XBOX is
connected and assigned it an IP Address consistent with the range I specified.
I cannot remove the networking because of the other computers/devices
included, but I have not tried connecting directly to the XBOX via crossover
cable. Obviously, that would only be for troubleshooting purposes since it
needs to be able to work on the network correctly ultimately.
Thanks for the support!

I think the problem could be as simple as the MCE2005 has the updated
Extender updates installed and your XBOX is running Ver.1 pressed CD's.
Once the Ver. 1.1 (or what ever they are called) XBOX CD's arrive, I bet
things take off.
or you could try this:
Go to Start, Programs, Accessories, Media Center, Media Center Extender
Manager. Then go to File, Add a new extender
and just to be sure:
Click Start, Run and enter SERVICES.MSC Look for the Media Center
Extender.Service. It should be set to Started and Automatic. If not, double
click it and change the options.
And then:
Under Control Panel, Users. Do you see and MCX1 account? I suspect you have
incompatible versions of extender software on the MCE2005 and XBOX. Wait for
the new DVD's to arrive.

It's not preferred, but it is okay to mix and match v1 software on the
device and v1.01 software on the PC.
Could you try exiting Norton completely, not just disabling it? Also,
please check the Application, System, and Security Event Viewer logs (right
click My Computer --> Manage) for any errors corresponding to the time that
you tried to connect and then post them here.

- Posted by Archgrad on October 4th, 2005
I exited Norton Antivirus completely and verified that I am not running any
other security software.
I checked the services manager and the MCE extender service is running.
I checked my user accounts and there is not a user called MCX1. When I
check the Media Center Extender Manager, the XBOX is still showing as "Not
onnected" but it does list User Account as MCX1. Also, just for
informational purposes, the properties also list the Hardware version: 0.0.1
and Software version: 0.0.1.
Should I create this user account for Windows? Should it have been
automatically created?
I checked the system logs from Event Viewer and the only thing related to
the Media Center Extender is under Application (I am only listing information
that is not obvious):
Information:
User: N/A
Event ID: 291
Description:
AffConfirm RQ - Device {00000000-0000-0000-0000-0050F219A068} - Successfully
affiliated.
All other notifications are either the same or: Product: Media Center
Extender -- Configuration completed successfully.
I did receive notification today that my update disk has been shipped so I
should have it in a few days.
Anyway, I try and connect and get the exact same black screen results.
Thanks again for your suggestions as I look forward to more troubleshooting
to hopefully have this fixed soon.

No, the Media Center Extender Manager will create them (MCX user accounts)
as needed.
You creating them will cause more issues rather than help.

I checked under Documents and Settings on the C drive and see the MCX1
account. I do not see it under Control Panel/Users though. I have tried all
suggestions so far and still only get a black screen after the XBOX Media
Center screen shows contacing and connecting for a minute or so.
Thanks again for all replies and suggestions.

that sounds like a problem i had a while ago, while i was in the dorms trying
to use the extender on the campus network. i don't see why it would be the
same case for you to have this problem on a home network, though.
here's what i had to do in order for the extender to work on campus.
1) start up xbox extender
2) before it showed the text description of what it is doing, disconnect the
hub from the wall ethernet cable
3) wait until the interface appears on the extender
4) replug the hub into the wall
thought i'd let you know to see if it works. it was a pain in the butt to do
it that way, but it worked great after taking those steps... each time i had
to do that.
