- xbox media extender disconnects
- Posted by Josh Burley on October 6th, 2005
Hi all,
I've got a wired network from my MCE box to my xbox. All pairs are wired,
and I've tested all cat5 segments with a cat5 testing tool. I've tried two
different 100mb switches (and a 100 mb hub) and still have the problem
described below:
When I first fire up my xbox with the media extender disc, it starts
contacting, then connecting, then brings up the menu for a split second and
then the error message saying that the MCE disconnected, and to hit OK. I hit
OK. This cycle repeats. And Repeats, and repeats, and repeats... after maybe
10 times, it connects and stays connected! Bandwidth is great, I can watch TV
that was recorded at high quality. I can fast forward and rewind.
My wife watches TV to sleep, and some time during the night it disconnects
(the MCE box is not set to hibernate or standby or anything). And then the
same thing... have to hit OK several times before it finally connects.
I've updated the Intel drivers for the network interface on the MCE box.
I've tried setting the negotiation to 100mbps full duplex rather than
auto-negotiate (on the MCE box, there doesn't seem to be a way to do it on
the xbox).
I've done slow and normal scans on the entire network segments, to make sure
I don't have shorts in the lines.
As mentioned above, I've also tried swapping out with various routes and
switches, from various manufacturers (and made sure I had the latest firmware
on each).
Any suggestions? The only thing I can come up with is that the xbox NIC is
getting flakey.... the MCE box was *not* one I built at home or anything, but
a verified, genuine MCE box.
Thanks!

Do you see any entries in the event viewer that co-incide with the failed
connection attempts with the Extender device?
Make sure you don't have Microsoft Anti-spyware installed on the MCE
machine, that's one potential source of connection error (MSAS will cause
issues with MCX devices if the real-time scanning component is enabled)
If that isn't the case, then the event viewer entries should help us narrow
this down.

Turns out, that's exactly what I tried, after reading a post from earlier
today. And, yep, it fixed the problem!!!
Thanks a bunch! I spent SO much time working on this, argh! Disabled so many
other services (Avast! virus scanning, VNC, MSN Remote Record)... the one
thing I must not have tried was the anti-spyware app.
Thanks again!
