I have recently been put in charge of maintaining a small
network. I encountered a problem that I'm hoping you might
be able to shed some insight to. The network consists of 4
servers and 12 Dell Optiplex workstations running
WindowsNT 4.0 SP 5. Before the scheduled time change event
I had checked that all had the option check marked to
automatically update for daylight savings. The department
chief had told me that the system has crashed twice each
year since it was installed due to the time change event.
It is a 24-hour office so I attended the event to minimize
the down time. Four workstations did not update their
clock. We are running time sensitive software that crashed
due to the disparity of the clocks. We also run software
to keep the network in time sync called NTP (network time
protocol) but I had heard that it conflicts with Microsoft
so it was disabled for this event. Is the (Microsoft)
source code for this event available? Does anyone know of
a solution to make the time change work correctly? The
correct time is absolutely required on this network. No,
there is no internet connection and in managements
infinite wisdom there is no virus scanner either.
