Backing up using hard disks instead of tapes?
Posted by Julian Milano on November 5th, 2003

I have 6 NT4 servers, each with its own DDS3 tape backup and running
NTBackup except for our DB server which has a DLT40/80GB tape drive running
BackupExec.

I'm sick of it. Some days, one tape will only backup 600MB and then ask for
the next tape, which would mean, to me, that I would have to put in yet
another tape to finish the backup, and that means the backup for that server
will finish, like, 11am.

A couple of the DDS3 tape drives are starting to show signs of ageing, so
I'm looking at a solution where I want to setup a seperate PC, a Backup
Server. Just run WinXP on it, and have 5x 120GB HDDs each in a USB-connected
external case, one for each day.

One backup package on the Backup Server, backing up the other 6 servers, to
the USB-connected HDD. Then in the morning, I just come in and remove the
existing drive with the fresh backup data, and place another one in its
place, ready for the night's backup.

I know HDDs are sensitive to shock, so I was thinking of putting togerher
like a camera case with lotsa padding, and cutout to the shape of the
HDD/External Case.

What do you guys think?
