Binding the dual processor to a single CPU?
Posted by it's Hadrian on August 20th, 2003

Hi Folks,

Running NT4 WS Sp6a on a dual processor machine (since
Januari/February 1997).

I have tried to use a desktop firewall program before (about a year
ago) and it didn't work on the above configuration.

Yesterday I contacted the firewall's company technical support and
their answer was that I could run their firewall program by 'binding
the dual processor to a single CPU'.

I haven't the slightest idea how to do this nor doesn't seem advisable
to me.

Any ideas or comments or should I dig in the resource kit or other NT
material.

Best regards,
Hadrian

That sounds pretty strange?!?! Why would the processor have anything to do
with this program?? Not sure what that means???

Hi Scott,

I had problems before with programs * that didn't run, or didn't run
properly, on this dual processor NT machine.

* Mostly with desktop firewalls and till now one AV.

One of the 'solutions' I heard before (example: one of the first
versions of ZoneAlarm) was: 'Use only one processor'.

Seems rather odd to me with a dual processor kernel.
I even don't know if this is possible since this seems an OS kernel
matter.

Of course I could install the single processor kernel again but that's
rather silly. Anyway there 're desktop firewalls that are able to work
perfectly on a dual processor NT system.

Kerio does and for intrusion detection BlackIce works as well. Even
ZoneAlarm (didn't try it out yet) works.

I tried in vain Mcafee (about a year ago) and the same goes for
Sygate.

Thought if anyone had an answer I could understand downhere :-)

Well let's just wait and see.

All the best,

Hadrian

Try searching the KB and newsgroups like this one for "processor affinity".

* Long time ago I bothered with that in NT.

Like you say it's rather odd that binding (only used that for
networking, etc. in NT) would have to do anything with that or the
program should run as a 'network service'.

I really have no idea anymore either.

Case closed, I'll use a desktop firewall that can handle two
processors.
