How can you defrag a NT4 machine, is it necessary to
purchase a utility?
if so which ones would you recommend?

You can purchase Executive Software's Diskeeper. As far
as if you need it, I'll let someone else answer...

I recommend Executive Software's Diskeeper 7.0 as well.
It's your best bet IMO.

I use both DiskKeeper and Raxco's "PerfectDisk". They both
do an excellent job. I have also tried about 5 or 6 others
and the only current version I would recommend *against* is
any version of the crapware from Symantec.

Among non-current versions I would also recommend against
doing off-line defrags with any version of O&O from before
about August 2002. My memory is kind of fuzzy on this -
it has been a *long* time since I tried out O&O - wouldn't
surprise me to find out that they have disappeared.

(Offline defrags are when you do a boot-time defrag of things
like page files and MFTs that can't be defragged while the OS
is running "normally".)
