- IDE miniport driver??

Hi,
I am having trouble using my new AIT-1 ATAPI SONY TAPE DRIVE and one of the possible solutions was to update the system BIOS and the IDE miniport driver, i have not been able to understand fully what exactly this "IDE miniport driver" is or what it does. Any assistance in explaining it to me would be appreciated.
my O.s is windows NT 4.0 sp6a if that makes a differnece??
