Notification of expiring password not working
Posted by Colleen on October 8th, 2004

Greetings all,

I have two problems but they coincide with each other.
They are as follows:

1.) We are running WinNt4.0 Server and the clients are
Windows XP. The problem we are having is my users are
not being notified that our passwords are going to
expire. Now, the accounts are setup in User Mgr. and we
do not have the passwords set to expire. However, every
45 days or so, our passwords do expire. We find this out
when we boot up our PCs and logging into the NT box and
we are told that our password are expired. We have some
Windows 2000 OS on our network and their notification
reminders that their passwords are going to expire is
working just fine. It is just the XP users that I have
the problem with. What can I do to fix this problem?

2.) XP users: When I reset these users passwords, I set
it to user must change password at next logon. They are
prompted to change their passwords when the first login.
Well this works and that is great. One would think that
once they change their passwords in the NT box and they
are connecting to the correct domain, the password change
process would end there. However, it doesn't change
there. Once they get to their desktop, they have to go
to Start-->settings-->Control Panel-->User accounts
Choose advance Tab--> Choose Manage PWs then Change PW
and they choose the domain then close everything. The
next step is change the computer pw by doing the three
finger salute ctl+alt+del. Then they are finished. If
they do not go through this process all of their drive
mappings do not reconnect. How can I fix this problem?
My Win2000 users do not have to do this. When they
change their password through the NT box that is it. Any
ideas??

I appreciate any and all suggestions to remedy this issue.
