NT4 corrupt os
Posted by Definitech on August 22nd, 2003

Hi Guys

I posted yesterday (21.08.03) concerning a need for an admin tool called
PView. My thanks for the private response.

However I have not been able to resolve my problems.

A couple of weeks ago I installed an application which I think must have
copied the wrong version of one (or more) system files. Since then I have
been encountering continued and ever more serious problems. Initially
Notepad refused to save or open any text files. Next I realised that
whenever I openned the file dialogue box, the view offered had trimmed all
folder names to the inital character. Now I am having problems openning
and/or saving using the file dialogue box and also from within some apps as
well. My diagnosis is that the command dialogue dll - comdlg32.dll is the
wrong version. This is supported by the version number that appears to be
for a Win98 version. I tried to unregister the dll but come up with an error
message indicating a possible corrupt dll and sugesting the use of PView. I
can not therefore rename or replace the dll.

I have tried applying SP6a again but this has not replaced the dll, I assume
because the existing (corrupt) is at a higher version.

The system is on an NTFS partition.

Help!! I really don't want to re-install as I will lose some settings which
I can not easily recover. Also (smacked wrist!!) my recovery disk is out of
date.

Anybody got any ideas how I can change permissions to allow me to unregister
the dll and copy and register a new one? For that matter is my suposition
correct concerning the reasons for the initail corrupt system? Any
help/advice gratefully received.

Any private response to j.tribe@btopenworld.com

You didn't post the version, but it fails to register/ unregister because it
contains no DLLRegisterServer or DllUnregisterServer function.

These may help.

Alternately you can try mv.exe from the Windows NT3.5 resource kit.
