Setup Disk 2 Errors
Posted by Zachary3@gmail.com on November 9th, 2006

I purchased Windows NT 4.0 and began to run the setup, it runs fine
until I need to insert Disk 2, which does not work, I put it into my
other computer to make a copy of it to see if I could run it from that
and it says it's not formatted. I've read about making new boot disks
via the CD but all the computers I have access to have XP on them
(except for one with Windows 3.1), which (according to microsoft.com)
will not let me make new ones so I don't accidently downgrade my
system. Is there a way to either fix the disk or make a new one on XP?

Don't you have a bootable cd-rom drive in your computer? If yes then
there is no need to use the setup diskettes, just install using the cd.
If you must use floppy diskettes, on 16 bit operating systems (Windows
95/98/Me) use winnt and on 32 bit operating systems use winnt32 to
create the diskettes. Use the /OX switch with the command. To create
the diskettes put the Windows NT4 cd in the cd drive then open a command
prompt an navigate to the I386 folder on the cd. From the location
issue the appropriate command for the operating system, for XP use:

winnt32 /OX

You will be prompted for diskettes to create the setup floppies. I have
never heard of not being able to create the diskettes with Windows XP.
But then there are lot of things that I haven't heard...

Try the following switching with the WINNT32.EXE (on NT-based systems) or
WINNT.EXE (on DOS/WIN9x based systems) from your NT4-CD:

/O create setup disks only
/OX Setup-create setup disks and start setup
/B setup without disks, all data are copied to the hdd

I don't know whether WINNT32.EXE starts on XP or not. If not, use WINNT.EXE from
plain DOS.

hope this helps
