If anyone know a better place for me topost this, please let me know. (I may
post it to XP General).
There is an old documented problem where a machine running NT sharing a
printer with a network will be inundated by Windows 2000 and cause high CPU
usage in SPOOLSS.exe.
There was a Win2000 fix, and suggestions to get the next SP for NT.
Last week I started having high CPU usage on SPOOLSS.exe. I have NT SP6
sharing a printer to a network including fully updated XP machines.
Performance Monitor shows SPOOLSS with a 104,000+ handle count.
So I've got all the updates, the setup has been running for years with no
trouble. So what's causing it? Half a dozen XP machines connect to the
share, but only one uses it - 50 pages once a day.
I notice from the logs on XP that it has an obsession with reloading printer
drivers a dozen times a day, and I am having to kill the Spooler process to
clear this problem off at least 3 times a day.
I've searched the 'net, and all I see is the Windows 2000 problem. I'm
suspecting an XP update with a side effect.
Any ideas gratefully accepted.
