- System could not log you on - Windows 2000 Professional
- Posted by forhisgreaterglory on March 11th, 2005
I have recently been "locked out" of my computer due to the fact that my O/S
is requiring a password for the Administrator - which I never set up. I have
the Windows 2000 Professional O/S and simply shut down my computer to re-boot
it as we had to re-boot the DSL box to check it out - and when I rebooted my
w2k os computer came up with the error message: System could not log you on.
Make sure your User name and Password are correct. Check the Caps lock key
....... and so on - . I've tried to boot into safe mode, safe mode with
networking, and the last known good configuration - all of these are still
requiring me to use a password. I've tried all the passwords I've ever used
and none have worked (though I am positive I didn't set up a password when I
set up the O/S to start with.)
There is only one thing I can think of that may be a factor - maybe someone
can tell me if it might be the cause or not. I had been trying to set up a
"VPN" between that computer and the one I am using now - so that I could get
my printer working with both computers while hooked up to only one (I know
I've used the printer from this computer while it was hooked up to another
computer before - just wasn't sure how I set it up before - so I was "goofing
around" with the VPN) - and I didn't complete the set up of that as I didn't
know my IP address or the path to use for that - so I stopped in the middle
and never completed it - but it may be the reason I am locked out - or so I
think.
Anyway - if anyone out there knows what I can do to get back in to my
computer I would be greatly appreciative.
Other facts you may need to know:
I have a dual boot system on that computer - W98 - and can boot to that O/S
- but the files are not shared between them - and I can't log into the
internet from that system - I don't have it set up to do that - and it's too
much work to configure it just now.
My two computers are hooked up to an SMC Barricade which has the DSL box
hooked to that.
If you need further info let me know. I really need help as I am currently
locked out of all my business files and email programs.
I do not have back ups of anything - and no CD burner on that computer - but
on the other one (the one I am on now for this email) I do - so if I can find
a way to "get into" the other computer to see the files from this one then I
can burn backup copies of all my files then re-install the O/S and programs.
Otherwise - is there a way to check the registry for the password that was
"set up" at the original set up (there wasn't one - but someone or something"
has set up one)
Any help SOON would be greatly appreciated.

Did you try just leaving the password box blank and pressing <Enter>?
Try this:
Offline NT Password & Registry Editor, Bootdisk / CD

allows W98 to access NTFS partitions. See

You can then use W98 to copy your files to the computer with a CD burner.

P.S. Alternatively you could boot from a DOS floppy and use the
following driver. http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/fr.../ntfsdos.shtml
Or boot from a Linux CD (e.g. from http://www.knoppix.com/) and use that.

You don't say what operating system is on the computer you are using
now. If it is Windows 2000 or XP then you could take the disk out of the
first computer and add it as an additional disk to the computer you are
using now. You could then back-up your files.
