2012 events. Do you have them?
Posted by James on February 15th, 2005

We have several 2012 servers that are receiving 2012 errors. There seems to
be no reported problems, but our servers have periods where they generate
batches of these errors.

We have tried everything you can think of from drivers, duplex settings,
firmware and even the make of network card. We use Cisco switches which are
also not reporting bad packets.

What I'd like to know is anyone else getting these errors?

Cheers

James

Explanation:
If you see many errors of this type in the event log in Event Viewer, they
indicate a network hardware or software problem.

Run netstat -es to look for any errors in the output of the interface
statistics also run any manufacturer-provided hardware diagnostics on the
interface.

Hi James,

In addition to Todd's great suggestions, One possbility is that this
issue is caused by a non-destructive Server Message Block (SMB) message
also known a "Status Message." Most commonly the error reported in the
event log is network error event 2012. It is a nondestructive event that
should not cause any loss of functionality.

You may also want to take a look at the following link for more details:

Thanks for you replies guys. Looks as if the SMB overflow is the cause. We
have had a look at the net mon trace and it's full of Status_Buffer_overflow
errors.
This is happening on a few of our servers. It's a shame this article is so
hard to find and we also have these errors on 2003 servers.

Cheers
James
