Administrator permissions
Posted by Sarah on February 21st, 2005

Hi everyone-

I am running Windows NT Back Office Small Business Server 4.5 on my machine.
I did not set up this server, it was set up before I started working on it.

The problem is, that the Administrator account is not allowed to do much of
anything! I log in with the administrator account all the time (i know you
shouldn't but this is how it was set up), and well, when I went to download
a file from the net onto the server , it says I am not allowed to download
anything!

The clients also log in as administrator to the domain, and they can
download stuff, but they cannot do certain things. The security seems like
it's all backwards. I tried creating a new user on the server under my
name, Sarah, and I made myself an administrator. Then I went to a client,
logged in as Sarah in our domain, tried to create a folder and it said I
didn't have the permissions to do so!

What I'd like to know is if somehow the administrator default permissions
got messed up. Thanks in advance.

Sarah

Go into User Manager for Domains > Policies > User Rights > under Rights
click on each option and see if Domain Admins are listed for any of these
rights.

Todd-

I went to the User Mgr for Domains, and 'Domain Admins' is not listed for
any option. 'Administrators' is though- I thought that if you list someone
as an administrator you get administrator rights?

If on a machine you list someone as an administrator you get administrator
rights on the local machine only. Except for Domain Controllers in which
you get domain admin rights.

Check your security settings in Internet Explorer.
