Browstat error on W2003 Server - help
Posted by Graham J on December 13th, 2004

Two W2003 servers in AD configuration. Server1 is Infrastructure Master and
has
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Browser\Parameters]
"IsDomainMaster"="TRUE"

Server2 has "IsDomainMaster"="FALSE" and "MaintainServerList" = "Yes"

A few selected clients also have "MaintainServerList" = "Yes", the remaining
clients have "MaintainServerList" = "No". The clients are a mix of XP, W2k,
W98SE.

At random, once every few days, clients cannot browse the network. Because
they have roaming profiles and the profiles are stored on Server1 this
effectively means the computers are unusable. The system usually recovers
spontaneously after an hour or so, but can be recovered by rebooting Server1.

When the fault occurs, I run BROWSTAT STATUS on Server1. It reports the
number of backup servers, hangs for about 90 seconds, then reports "unable to
retrieve server list from \\Server1 : 53". Sometimes this report ends in the
code 64 instead of 53. When the system is working normally, Browstat Status
responds immediately with the expected information.

Bear in mind that I open the command window on Server1, run the command on
Server1, and the error report says it cannot find the list from Server1;
therefore the implications about network failure of error codes 53 and 64 are
meaningless.

Please can somebody help me fix this. The system is virtually useless at
present.

Thanks
