- connecting Win client to Windows server over TCP/IP, not in local subnet
- Posted by on July 27th, 2004
I have a W2003k Server set up on a static IP in Office "A". It has a DNS
entry.
A Mac computer in Office "B" can easily connect to a Macintosh share that
I've set up, even though the Mac is in a different subnet.
There are other Windows XP and Win2k client machines spread throughout the
enterprise that I'd like to connect to shares on the server in Office "A".
What steps does one follow to make that happen? Is it possible? So far, I
haven't had any luck figuring out how to make machines outside the local
subnet/workgroup connect directly via Windows networkworking to the shares
on the machine.
Surely our Mac isn't more capable in this regard. What am I missing?

You haven't given us much information. Can you ping the IP address of the
Win 2003 Server from a Win2k client? If so, you should be able to connect
to the share. On the Win2k client, click Start/Run \\IPaddressofServer
ENTER. What happens?
