Default gateway list behaviour (Windows 2003)
Posted by Faust on September 29th, 2004

Hello,

I have a W2003 server connected to an ADSL router. Sometimes this ADSL line
goes down for some minutes, so I added a secondary router as backup, using
an ISDN line.
I added the IP address of this secondary router in the list of default
gateways (TCP/IP properties of server NIC) and really it works: when the
ADSL router fails, all TCP/IP traffic is redirected to ISDN router.
The trouble is that, when ADSL returns up, the traffic continues on
secondary router and never returns to primary (unless you restart system,
obviously). If you try to brutally power down the ISDN router, nevertheless,
all traffic stops: Windows 2003 doesn't try to switch again to primary
router neither in this case.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi

I think for this to work effectively you really need an ADSL router with
ISDN failover support. This way the ADSL router will work out all the
default gateway info for you.

There are routers that do this, can't think of any off the top of my head, a
search in Google should sort this for you.

Regards

Faust,

Re: the Windows side of things, Windows can only have one active default
gateway at a time. When a machines's default gateway fails, and the machine
is configured for multiple gateways, traffic will automatically fail over to
the next gateway on the list but will *not* fail back to the original
gateway should the second gateway also fail, short of rebooting the machine.
This is a hard-coded design.

See the section on 'Dead Gateway Detection' at the bottom of this article:
