- delegate "manage documents" on printers to our helpdesk staff
- Posted by Deas on March 28th, 2006
hello,
we want to grant our helpdesk staff the right to purge documents hanging in
a printqueue to make basic troubleshooting.
we don´t want to give them the right to log on to our printcluster (local
admin)
we don´t want to give them the right to change anything on the printer
properties
i know i could select each printer and add a group to the security tab - but
i don´t want to do this for 800 queues worldwide...
is it possible to set this somewhere in the registry/policy or with a tricky
configured group etc?
thank you very much for your help!

Just add the Help Desk users to the Print Operators AD group.

hello,
but print operators are allowed to add and delete printers - we don´t want
our helpdesk to do that!

Well then your asking too little. If all you want them to do is to be able
to purge the queque and cannot trust them enough not to be able to do
anything else then I suggest you teach them all how to manually shutdown or
disconnect power on these printers. There is not a group or right that will
allow them to "only" purge the printer.

hi,
they know how to disconnect the power of our printers - but there are
situations where they need it. just think of a printer which was out of order
for few hours and has many job´s from different users in the queue. we have
24x7 operations in our company and the helpdesk is also available 24x7.
additionally this is a task which should be handled by our helpdesk (sla).
what i can´t imagine is that there is a security tab on each printer but it
is not possible to add a group by policy, etc. to it?!?
