DHCP reservation
Posted by MarcusB on August 25th, 2006

I just want to allow only people with reserved MAC addresses to use
DHCP. I use reservation which assign IP to MAc address, but I do not
know how to make that registred MAC will get IP from the pool?

But then again -- anyone can add that same class ID or change their MAC
address and get IP address from DHCP server... (it will take a skilled
person about 1 minute).

There is also anther option. I can statically assign myself IP address from
same subnet range and use that to gain access to e.g. other computers on
same LAN or e.g. internet (unless firewall prohibits that).

But I dont think wht he is lloking for.....................

I assume you want to protect your network from unauthorised connections, but
DHCP does not do that. You would need to use a different method. DHCP is
just a method of giving addresses to people who ask for one, like a person
handing out leaflets.

No I do not want to protect. I just want to make life easier for our
visitors who are comming with laptop.

All staff have assigned IP to mac addresses., plus we have 10 IP
assigned for extra computers. We want that all extra people do not use
this 10 addresses, we want assign IP from the pool of IP addresses. But
we know that there is arround 30 people but we can assign max 15
addresses at one time. The only thinkg is that there is no more than 15
people at the same time.

You do not understand my problems. Thats right. DHCP is giving IP
numbers to the people, that what I want. I just want make reservation
for the pools like you make reservation for seperate machine. I can make
reservation for machine. I just want that for example 10 IP numbers will
be reserved to 20 MAC addresses. The problem is that I have more
computers than IP numbers.

In this case, make your lease period short and go out and get more
addresses. There is no other solution to having more computers than
numbers.
