- differences between windows server 2003 sp1 and windows server 200
- Posted by Greg on March 1st, 2006
Hello all,
We are just starting the process to upgrade from 2000 to 2003. The question
that I had is, "Would it make more sense to use Windows server 2003 R2 at
this point?". What are the key differences with Windows server 2003 R2 as
opposed to Windows server 2003 SP1? Is it just features? Why use R2? Is R2
basically "Windows server 2003 SP2"?
Any documentation that explains the differences between the two would be of
great help.
Thanks for your help.
Sincerely,
Greg

If you need the extra features that R2 provides (now or sooon in the
future), then it makes sense for you to upgrade to R2.
Please see http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv...tsnewinr2.mspx
(What's new in WIndows Server 2003 R2).

Thanks Jabez,
I actually saw this article online and I was looking at. However, I was
wondering "What exactly is Windows server 2003 R2"? Is is much different from
Windows Server 2003 SP1? Is it similar in style and function to Windows XP
SP1 to SP2?
Basically, is this an upgrade to Windows server 2003 SP1 or is it the new
recommended platform when installing Windows server 2003?
Thanks for your help.
Take care,
Greg

Hi Greg,
Well, R2 introduces new features to Windows Server 2003 SP1. It's not
something like SP1 to SP2 (SP stands for Service Pack). R2 unofficially
stands for "Release 2".
We compare R2 with WinServer 2003 SP1 like Win98 and Win98SE <g> Or maybe we
can't...
R2 adds new features, no bug fixes to 2003 SP1. Every other things are the
same.
If you think you need to use the additional features of R2, then go get it.
Otherwise you will be good if you just get WinServer 2003 SP1.

Hi there...
But If I want those features, I must buy a licence to get Win 2003 R2,
there are no chances to get those optimizations with a normal Upgrade
by an exe or msi-File?
Regards,
Thilo

I'm afraid not, at the moment (and in the near future). You will need a new
license.
