Different Desktop background per user?
Posted by Newbie on January 30th, 2007

Hi All

Does anybody know how I can show a different Desktop background per user?

I work for a school and I want to display Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, etc on the
desktop (say top right of the screen) when the relevant class logs in and
the only way I can think of this is to have a diff background pic per login.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Robbie

Hi SmogFrog

Thanks for the fast reply.

Please forgive my ignorance, but how would one do this through user group
policies?

Thanks

Robbie

Hi Robbie

How about using user group policies, making sure the relevant years are in
the relevant groups?

Normally you would make sure the relevant students are in the correct OUs,
not groups. Groups can be used to filter GPOs, but the primary method
to make such assignements is by OU (or Site and Domain.)

Apologies for being a bit thick, but what are OUs?

Thanks

Sorry, Organisational units - doh!

But in what area of GPO/OU enables me to pre-define a set start menu
structure for each group?

The GPE simply seems like a glorified tickbox list. There doesn't seem to
be any way of saying 'the Start Menu should look like this'

Is it really possible to do?

Thanks

I probably should have written it out at least once.

In the GPO, you can redirect the Users' start menu to a specific location,
then you create that structure on a file server (or copy an existing one)
and place it on the share/dir you pointed to in the GPO.

No, in some cases you can do more than tick -- you can redirect certainly
logical folders to server share locations.
