- DNS CNAME question, S2003, Exchange OWA
- Posted by Will Niccolls on April 25th, 2006
If: I have a certificate issued for my mail server in its name:
mail1.contoso.com
But I have an A and MX record for
webmail.contoso.com
Can I enter a CNAME record so that when users use Outlook Web Access by
webmail.contoso.com, it goes to mail1.contoso.com and thereby has the right
hostname and certificate?
Thanks.

No this will not work. The hostname is very important in regard to your
certificate. It is only valid for the hostname that you registered it.
You would need to get a new certificate in the name of
webmail.contoso.com, or possibly setup a web-page forwarder to get
webmail.contoso.com to forward to mail1.contoso.com.

Thanks Steve.
So if my hostname on my LAN is
mail1.contoso.com
and my users access it via OWA by
webmail.contoso.com/exchange
Should I get the certificate in the name of
webmail.contoso.com
Right?
Thanks

The easiest thing to do is get a star certificate. *.contoso.com. That
allows for any sub domain of contoso. You can also use it on multiple
servers.

Hope It Helps!
