- Domain PC unable to connect to Novell shared folder
- Posted by Hong Jin on May 11th, 2007
Hi,
I have a Windows XP computer connected to a Domain 2003 Server. I have
another Novell Server where old accounting programs & files resides.
On the domain PC, i access Control Panel > Network Connections > Local Area
Network > Install... to install Client Service for Netware. After i restart
the computer, i noticed that No preferred server was found.
Do i actually need to change my domain login information to match the login
information in Novell Server? Because when i use NET USE, i supplied the
correct Novell login information.
Is there a solution to my problem?
Thanks in advance.

First. If you have rather new Netware OS, Windows XP built-in client
won't help you, because it can use only IPX protocol.
Second. Netware servers has ability to share their volumes as SMB and as
native NCP shares - you need Novell Client software only if you need
access to native NCP shares.
Third. In this situation you has two possible solutions:
1. Install Novell Client software (it is freely downloaded from
download.novell.com) on each client, let Novell Client change AD user
password to match eDirectory password (so user will type his password
only once).
2. Configure Novell identity management (former DirXML) to synchronize
your AD tree and eDirectory tree, so passwords and user names will be
same and users will be able to use Netware SMB shares without any
special client and additional authentication
P.S. There is also one more solution, but I haven't tested it yet -
configure NMAS Kerberos methos, to allow user authenticate in eDirectory
with his domain credentials - I think this is best method, however it is
also most challenging method.
