- <drive letter> is not a valid drive, or you do not have access - performing ASR
- Posted by James on November 15th, 2004
Hi group:
I'm attempting to use Windows backup to create an ASR set. My current
process is to do the ASR backup and save it to the hard drive. I then
backup the .bkf file to a DVD disc.
During testing, I booted the box using the installation CD for Windows
2003 Server and selected F2 at the spot where it prompts you for doing
an Automated System Recovery.
It goes through the normal setup procedure and then it finally gets to
the point where it launches the backup program (during setup, before
Windows is actually re-installed) and prompts me for the location of
the .bkf file. When I select my D: drive, which is the DVD rom drive
(not a writer drive), I get the error 'D: is not a valid drive, or you
do not have access'. The odd thing is, is that while the Open dialog
box is displayed, I can see the contents of the disc I'm trying to
restore from. What's even odder is that I can right-click the .bkf
file in the Open File dialog, select 'Copy', then navigate to C: drive
using the File Open dialog and select 'Paste'. It will copy the file
from my DVD rom drive to the C: drive, after which I can specify the
..bkf file on C: drive and the ASR procedure will successfully finish.
How can I correct this 'bug' so that I don't have to copy and paste
everytime?
Thanks,
James

Use Firestreamer-DVD to back up directly to DVD with ntbackup.

I don't think this is going to help me - remember that I'm restoring a
complete system using ASR. During the ASR process, in which Windows is
not fully installed (the ASR installs a simple instance of Windows),
the backup utility prompts for the location of my backup file. If I'm
using a tape drive, where can I get the drivers to load after I press
the F6 key during setup to load additional drivers? Apparently the
support disks need to have a txtsetup.oem file on them.
Thanks -
James

You don't need to press F6, as long as your DVD drive is recognized as
DVD-ROM at least. If you can boot from Windows CD-ROM, then you can restore
with Firestreamer. See http://www.firestreamer.com/fsdvd/help/asr.asp . You
boot from Windows CD-Rom, then insert your ASR DVD when prompted - that's
it.
..
By the way, why did you think it was not going to help you? The website
clearly says that ASR is fully supported.
